Municipalities want out of Counties severance process
The United Counties
will be soliciting its member municipalities to determine how many municipalities
would like to bring the severance process back to their own municipalities.
"We feel we can speed the process by a month. We are going through the same
process now. We have the expertise that we feel we can handle it," said
Mayor Ron Holman who expects the township's planning committee will be discussing

United Counties launching economic development
effort
The
United Counties of Leeds and Grenville is launching a new economic development
strategy next month with the establishment of a new regional economic
development office. Last week county councillors hired Portland resident
consultant Bob Cheetham and Brockville Tourism Manager Ann Weir to oversee
the new program. "This represents a significant commitment from counties
council to address the local economy, both present and future. It is a
huge opportunity for our region to not only keep our economic engine running
now, but to give it plenty of fuel for the future," said Counties' Warden

The Portland Football Club's U14 girls team could not have picked a better
night to announce that they have decided to enter a soccer tournament
in Sweden in 2010. In front of 80 hometown fans at Kin Park in Portland
on Monday, the girls of head coach Scott Halladay defeated the Cataraqui
Clippers 4-1. After the win, the team, parents, friends and fans gathered
for a meeting to officially declare that they will follow in the footsteps
of the U18 boys of 2004 and head to the country known for its large-scale
international soccer tournaments...[more]

Some downtown businesses
upset with village support of Heritage Festival
Last month's
Heritage Festival in Westport was a success by organizers' standards and
some businesses but it turns out not everyone was happy. Seven business
owners accosted Coun. Brad Wing on the street in the days following the
event, he told Westport Council Monday night. The village approved the
closure of a section of Bedford Street Sat., June 26 for vendors and displays.
"If we're going to sponsor events, they would like to see us do it on
a weekend other than a long weekend," he said, adding that those business
owners told him their business was down over last year. "I realize there
are other factors like the dollar and the weather," Wing said...Read

Mueller off to nationals in BC
Shannon Mueller of Athens will compete at the junior Canadian track and
field championships in Abbottsford B.C. next week. The former Rideau District
High School student qualified for the nationals at the Ontario Track and
Field championships which was held on June 20, 21 and 22 in Ottawa. In
Ottawa, she finished in fourth place in pole vault with an effort of 2.75m,
and tenth in the 100m hurdles. It was Mueller's first tournament competing
with higher, Olympic sized hurdles as she moved up an age class. Her fastest
time of the day over the 84cm obstacles was 15.44 sec. The junior nationals
